Roland Mouret: Great sex is better than a good dress
publié le 24/09/2014 à 05:33 |
French designer Roland Mouret is all too aware of the powers of seduction his dresses possess; they've wrapped the curves of many a Hollywood starlet, from Naomi Watts and Cameron Diaz, to Rachel Weisz and Amy Adams.
Most famous for his beautifully cut, figure-hugging Galaxy dress, Mouret has revealed that he created the iconic style for curveacous role models Scarlett Johansson and Dita Von Teese. Speaking to Red magazine of the style's inception he explained: "It was a dress for women who need to wear bras... There is something about the body shape that's become part of my signature silhouette. Dresses are for undressing. We all dress up to undress."
Indeed, undressing is at the very forefront of his creative mind as he says: "I've learnt everything about fashion in bed. I've been touching so many bodies to know how to dress them up. I think I translate "touch" into clothes."
Mouret recently enjoyed a hugely successful collaboration with high street chain Banana Republic and is showing his spring/summer 2015 collection in Paris on Thursday, September 25, but it's his friendship with Victoria Beckham that has perhaps garnered the most headlines. Beckham was a champion of his designs and when she launched her own line in 2008, Mouret's influence was all too clear to see.
The two are still great friends; "When you go out with Victoria, she's hysterical" he shares. "At Christmas we went to a small cocktail bar in London and we just sat there all night, with no bodyguards, drinking cocktails and giggling with the barman. Nobody disturbed us. Perhaps that is something you wouldn't normally expect with Victoria?"

London-based Mouret may have an abundance of starry friends with immaculate figures but he knows all too well of the average woman's body hang-ups. "It's always the tummy. Women would like to have a concave tummy," he says. "They don't really like their upper arms, oh, and they don't like their thighs. In fact, most women don't like a lot about their bodies. We have such a problem with body dysmorphia in our society and women as young as 30 have the impression that they've started to lose it. I think it's weird. They have to stop not liking themselves."
Women can no doubt learn to like themselves a bit more in his dresses, but when that doesn't work he suggests: "Then you need to have sex. You may lack confidence when you look at yourself in the mirror but the moment you see yourself through the eyes of your lover, you start to change. An outfit can do the trick but having sex with somebody you love is much better."
