All eyes will be on Princess Letizia when she is crowned queen of Spain tomorrow. But she is already a style sensation

She is known for her impeccable style and elegance, and tomorrow she will become the new queen of Spain. Princess Letizia, a former journalist married to Felipe, Prince of Asturias, is touted to be the next big thing in the royal dress circle. Like Kate Middleton, she too was a commoner who rose to stardom after getting married to Spain’s royal scion. Here’s a lowdown on the trendsetter, who is making headlines with her perfect wardrobe choice and classy taste.

Designer Payal Jain feels that Princess Letizia exudes elegance, grace, dignity and sophistication in every outfit she wears. She says, “She is effortlessly fashionable and experiments with her choice of silhouettes, colours, lengths and ensembles all the time. Her sense of fashion is classical, timeless, no-fuss and extremely apt for her position. I absolutely love her sense of colour. She represents the modern day woman who makes a contemporary style statement with each look.”

Princess Letizia reminds designer Varun Bahl a little of a young Queen Rania of Jordan, especially in the way she carries herself and her face. He says, “She and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, do share an uncannily similar style sense, but the similarity is only visual. Princess Letizia has often been seen in Spanish designers, names we don’t hear on a regular basis: Felipe Varela and Adolfo Dominguez being prominent parts of her wardrobe. I think that’s a lovely message to send out as the next Queen.”

Designer Raakesh Agarvwal points out that Letizia’s modest background and journalist career reflects in her fashion sense. He says, “She’s anti-flash and carries off the minimal look beautifully. Sleek sheath dresses by day, and lacy cocktail dresses by night she dresses like a sophisticated lady. She also loves her structured blazers. I would definitely give her points over Kate simply for her cool edgy styling. Her red pumps and leather leggings at a royal event made news and how! Letizia can carry off her leather jackets and prints with just as much aplomb as her cocktail dresses.”

On the other hand, designer Michelle Salins points out how Princess Letizia is quite a risk taker when it comes to fashion. She mentions, “She seems to love to experiment, and knowing that she has the figure or body type to carry off various styles, she uses this to her advantage. I believe it’s not fair to compare Kate with her as they both have been commoners. Both of them have taken to their roles perfectly, and it is very evident that their popularity as fashion icons has risen because for a commoner it is easier to relate to them. The other similarity is that both of them recycle their outfits. Personally I think Princess L’s most fashionable moment was her wedding gown and the tiara she wore.”

Sneha Mehta of Sneshaa Designs compares the two royal icons and says that there is something unique about both the princesses. “They are both inspirational and fashionable. From fashion point of view, I would rate them both A+ as they have the body and style to carry different trends,” says Sneha.

While Kate is a safe dresser, Letizia likes to experiment with her style, says designer Veda Raheja, adding, “Princess Letizia is more experimental in terms of incorporating bright colours and silhouettes to accentuate her slender frame with loose blouses and bell-bottom high-waist trousers.”
