The Australian Fashion Chamber has partnered with The UK Department for International Trade to announce it will head to London to present its next Designers Abroad showroom during London Fashion Week in February 2018. The Designers Abroad Program began in 2015 in an effort to strengthen the Australian fashion industry via the international promotion of outstanding local talent. The competition to select four Australian fashion designers to showcase their work in the 2018 showroom will be launched by iconic fashion designer, Anya Hindmarch, at the British High Tea in Sydney on September 5 and Melbourne on September 12, 2017. “The UK offers tremendous opportunities for ambitious and innovative designers and I hope that I can help by sharing my own experiences with Australia’s next wave of global fashion entrepreneurs,” says Hindmarch. This year’s showroom took place in New York on May 18 and showcased the work of six Australian designers including Macgraw, Albus Lumen, Pared Eyewear, Sarah & Sebastian, State of Escape and Aje. “With the incredible success of Designers Abroad in Paris and New York, London is the perfect new destination to take our talented Australian designers to showcase their collections,” says chair of the Australian Fashion Chamber and editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia, Edwina McCann. “This opportunity will allow a group of local designers to break into the UK market, a task that would usually be a massive undertaking and expense, and therefore probably out of their reach.” A panel of judges will assess each of the applicants on a range of criteria, including readiness and suitability for UK expansion, before four designers are selected and flown to London for the 2018 showcase via the Australian Fashion Chamber’s official airline partner, British Airways.
