Local Designer Pioneers Slow Fashion Movement In Atlanta publié le 04/06/2015 à 16:52
Atlanta isn’t known as a fashion hub, but fashion designer Megan Huntz is looking to change that.
Huntz got her start in design at the Pratt Institute in New York. There, she studied industrial design, which is basically an umbrella term for the design of everything functional. She then moved to Europe to study and do fashion, working with companies like Meltin'Pot, Spazio Lazzari of Treviso and brands of the Max Mara group.
Huntz returned to Atlanta four years ago and has started her own business. She calls her move to Atlanta "a double edged sword." On the one hand, she is a trailblazer, but on the other, there are few mentors and a small labor force with the skills necessary to make clothes.
Huntz, though, is not alone, and this week, as part of Modern Atlanta's design week, she is curating a temporary shop to recognize the designers whom are part of the slow fashion movement. The shop, called "Slow Mode," is at Space 2 on Edgewood Avenue.
But, what is slow fashion? Huntz explained how it's similar to the slow food movement.
"It's returning to everything that's eco and ethical in one unified movement," she said.
She reflects that ethos as a small business owner, who is financially independent and who is creating jobs here in Atlanta.
"Fashion is all about a reflection on the moment that we live in now," Huntz said. "People want to shop local, and people do want to buy things that are ethically made."
