  • My Life Is Chaotic, But I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way
    publié le 24/12/2014 à 13:38

When you think of Ivanka Trump, you immediately think of Ivanka Trump the business women and entrepreneur—and she is those things, but she, like so many women we know, also is so much more.

The fashion designer, budding lifestyle guru, wife, mother, sister, and daughter knows that all women have an “extended job title,” and so she recently launched #WomenWhoWork, asking women everywhere to share just how multidimensional they are (her own extended job title sweetly includes “the first one up in the morning and the last one to give kisses at night”) and she’s gotten the likes of FEED’s Lauren Bush Lauren, Dannijo’s Danielle andJodie Synder, Debbie Sterling of Goldieblox, Malala Fund co-founder Shiza Shalid, and more to chime in.

We recently caught up with Trump about the initiative, and asked how she balances work and family, how her style has changed since becoming a mom (daughter Arabella Rose is nearly 2; son Joseph Frederick is one), and what’s next for her Ivanka Trump clothing and accessories collection.

What made you want to start #WomenWhoWork?

The women working today look fundamentally different from women in previous generations. In my mother’s generation, when she was at work, she only talked about work. At that time, women were at a pivotal point in history where they were fighting for a seat at the table. For a “businesswoman” to pursue priorities outside the office was often seen as an indication that she wasn’t fully invested in her career. My generation is the first to embrace the fact that our lives are multidimensional. With the #WomenWhoWork initiative, my goal was to show the world what it looks like to be a modern professional woman, and to celebrate the many ways in which women work—at all aspects of their lives.

Who are some of the women who inspire you?

My mother, first and foremost. Chelsea Clinton, Malala Yousafzai. I have a great deal of respect for the women featured in our video—the projects they’re working on and the ways they’re effecting change for our generation is deeply inspiring.

You’ve got quite the resume. How you balance work and family?

Being a mother has made me incredibly efficient. To me, life is less about the pursuit of balance and more about ensuring that my priorities are aligned with my personal values and professional goals. My family is my priority. I have a standing lunch date with my daughter, and my husband and I schedule a date night at least once a week. I like to be the one to do the school drop-offs. We try not to make plans on weekends so that we can spend time together as a family. If I’m not traveling, I make sure that I’m home before my children go to bed—even though that means I log back on to the computer to wrap up work late into the night. It’s chaotic and I don’t get much sleep but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We all are the architects of our own lives and I’m constantly working on the right blueprint for mine!

How has becoming a mom changed your style?

It hasn’t changed my style so much as it has influenced the pieces we’re creating for the Ivanka Trump collection. Multifunctional is key. I appreciate feminine silhouettes that seamlessly transition from one facet of life to another. For me, it’s a great dress that I can wear to play with the children before school, then feel comfortable in on a construction site, confident in while negotiating a deal, and later feel elegant in when meeting my husband for dinner.

Anything we should know about what’s happening with the collection?

I’m obsessed with our spring handbags and am looking forward to seeing them at Nordstrom in March.

Any New Year’s Resolutions you’d like to share?

To make less resolutions! It’s funny, when you set goals in a professional context, those become things you strive to meet—but when you set resolutions, they’re abandoned by the end of January! This year my resolution is to make fewer resolutions. I’m only making one and it relates to general health and wellness. This is the year I am going to treat myself better: I’m going to sleep a tiny bit longer, eat healthier, get a bit more exercise and enjoy some downtime. With two small children, it will be challenging, but let’s see if I can adhere to it!
