There’s more to fashion in China than the conspicuous consumption of Western luxury brands: the country also develops, nurtures and exports its own exciting creative talent. In part two of our series on Chinese fashion, Susie Lau presents her choices of some of the most exciting and innovative designers on the scene.

Anais Mak

This young Hong Kong designer is known for her cheeky, boyish take on womenswear. After studying fashion design at the Studio Berçot in Paris, she set up her label Jourden, which now shows its collections in the city’s fashion weeks.

Masha Ma

Masha Ma was born in Beijing, studied in London – where she also worked an assistant to Alexander McQueen – and now divides her time between Paris and Shanghai. Her most recent show at Paris Fashion Week featured a witty take on an item often seen in China’s polluted big cities but seldom on the catwalk: the disposable face mask.

Min Wu

Min Wu graduated from the London College of Fashion in 2013 with an innovative collection that incorporated futuristic design with sculptural elements. She is just beginning her career but has already featured in shoots in the Chinese and UK fashion press, establishing herself as one to watch.

Ms Min

Many Chinese fashion designers who find international success base themselves abroad – but not Min Liu, the designer behind Ms Min. After studying and working in Europe (including a stint at Viktor & Rolf in Amsterdam) she set up her brand in the south-eastern city of Xiamen.
