Ethan Hawke looks ready to ride as he joins Boyhood castmates Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, and Lorelai and Richard Linklater at the AFI Awards

The film may have taken 12 years to make but it takes just one luncheon to get the cast of Boyhood together.

Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette showed newcomers Ellar Coltrane and Lorelai Linklater what award season is all about at one of the first big events on Friday.

The actors, along with director Richard Linklater, joined together at the 2015 American Film Institute Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Their film has been marked as one to watch chosen as one of AFI’s Top 11 Movies of the Year, which is a good omen ahead of Sunday's Golden Globes where the epic independent feature is nominated for five nods, including Best Picture.

For the daytime event Ethan took a rather unusual approach to red carpet dressing, donning a suit with no tie but adding a big hat instead.

The 44-year-old skipped wearing the popular fedora in favour of a cowboy meets prohibition gangster felt hat.

While Sinister star was happy breaking with convention, co-star Patricia went for a more tried and tested look.

The 46-year-old donned a black long sleeve knee length dress by Black Halo.

However while simple, The Medium actress' gown was not as conservative as it appeared at first, as it featured a large lace panel up her thigh and smaller panels on her shoulders.

Wearing her blonde bob poker straight, the star added a pair of understated black pumps by Kurt Geiger and a matching clutch by Jinammi.

The veteran pair led the way for their younger co-stars Ellar and Lorelai, who all but grew up on film as the movie was made over 12 years.

While she may be new to the awards scene, 20-year-old Lorelai certainly has red carpet posing - but maybe not smiling - down.

The Hollywood newcomer made sure to show off her outfit from every angle.

Like Ethan, the young star chose to wear a slightly unusual choice donning a lace dress with peek-a-boo diamond cut outs down the front over a pair of grey stockings.

Giving her look an extra alternative boost, she added a pair of stud wrapped black leather boots.

The movie is not just about family and growing up, but is also a family affair Lorelai's father Richard directed the film.

Boyhood has already proved victorious with the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress.

The critically acclaimed film follows a boy named Mason (played by Ellar) as he ages from six to 18, delving into the emotional progression of growing up as a boy in America.

Mason divides his time between his divorced parents, played by Patricia and Ethan – a struggling mother and a wannabe musician.
