Fall 2015 Menswear - County of Milan

Marcelo Burlon, Milan's latest polymath, began his steady rise to stardom working in nightlife. He knows how to drive a crowd and has a rare talent for aggregation, which was apparent Monday night at the County of Milan show: Everybody who is anybody in town was attending, together with a horde of wannabes and club kids. It made for a lively event.

Burlon and a business partner launched the label little more than two years ago with a bunch of T-shirts, but it has quickly spawned a complete collection, becoming one of Italy's fastest-growing fashion phenomena with revenues already skyrocketing into the millions.

This was County of Milan's first official show after last season's thunderous debut performance at Pitti Uomo, and it felt like a homecoming for Burlon, who hails from Patagonia but found his proverbial pot of gold, by way of very hard work, in Italy. This season he decided to merge nods to his native country, Argentina—malambo dancers opened the show—with the dark metropolitan aesthetic he is known for. The look was fast and athletic, with allover graphic prints in dramatic color juxtapositions, and ponchos and blankets providing an exotic/functional touch.

Burlon moves along the lines of the glorified urbanwear that is proliferating across the fashion landscape. The references in his work are certainly not hidden: Helmut Lang's martial simplicity, Rick Owens' gothic pragmatism. Burlon added a fierce touch of visual assertiveness to the general debate, which made for intriguing contrasts and some appealing pieces, like the technical cloaks and parkas. More than the clothes, however, what really sucked you in was the contagious and spontaneous energy of the whole performance. It doesn't happen that often, in Milan at least, and it was uplifting.
